Planning a trip to New Orleans? Be sure to stop by Abita Brewing. When planning my recent trip to New Orleans, my must visit place was the Abita Brewing Company.
About a 50 minute drive over the Lake Ponchartrain causeway from New Orleans, Abita Brewing is nestled in the woodsy town of Covington, Louisiana.
Abita Brewing is one of the most popular brews found in New Orleans, in every bar and restaurant in the French Quarter. They were the first craft breweries in Louisiana. They currently distribute to 44 U.S. States and 10 Internationally. Abita Brewing is Green Brewing and is committed to preserving it’s environment through conservation, energy efficiency and corporate social responsibility.
“Abita uses only the finest ingredients – British and North American malted barley, German and American yeast strains, Pacific Northwest hops and the pure artesian water of Abita Springs. In Abita Springs, we are blessed with the purest of water. Drawn from our deep wells, our pristine water is not altered in any way. Abita Beer has no preservatives, additives or stabilizers and is cold filtered. The result is beer that is the finest and freshest tasting as proven by our loyal customers and great chefs of the south who use Abita Beer in their recipes.” – Abita Brewing
Their most popular beer, Abita Purple Haze. Other flagship beers include: Amber, Light, Golden, Turbo Dog, Andygator, Wrought Iron IPA and Big Easy IPA. All of which I can say I’ve had while visiting New Orleans. Abita also offers seasonal brews, harvest brews, “Big beers” (all available locally only) and sodas! Their rootbeer and King cake soda was a favorite with my kids.
Brewery tours are available. They have both guided and self-guided tours. The guided tour will take your through their brewery while learning the brew process. Tours are $5 and are family-friendly (under 21 is free) and handicap accessible. The guided tour also includes four 4-ounce tastings of their beers. The self guided tours are free and include access to the mezzanine level that overlooks the brew house tanks. Inside the brewery, you can view videos about Abita beerand it’s brewing process from a touchscreen device.
While at the brewery, I was able to sample a flight of their Pilot Brews as well as some beer cocktails they shared. Our tour guide Rachel was amazing. Very personable, friendly and very knowledgeable. The Abita Tap Room is a great place to relax and enjoy flights of their tasting beers. You can also taste their pilot brews and sodas. The Tap Room has a calendar of events and food trucks. You can also bring your own food to have while enjoying Abita brews.
There is also the Abita Brew Pub just a few miles away from the brewery located in the town of Abita Springs. The pub sells growlers and has all it’s beers on tap. They also have a dining room which serves as a full service restaurant. Visitors can sample beers or purchase six packs or 1/2-gallon growlers to go. The gift shop offers glassware, t-shirts, hats and other gift items.
Beer lover or not, you’ll find something at Abita! If beer isn’t your thing, try their hard soda and flavored sodas.
